Understanding Sciatica: Causes and Symptoms
Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the lower back and travels down one or both legs. Dr. Morris will explain the common causes of this pain, which often involve compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. These causes can include:
- Herniated Discs: When the soft inner part of a spinal disc bulges or ruptures, it can press on the sciatic nerve
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal can put pressure on the nerves, including the sciatic nerve
- Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis muscle in the buttock can compress the sciatic nerve, leading to pain
- Spondylolisthesis: When one vertebra slips forward over another, it can sometimes compress the sciatic nerve
- Bone Spurs: These bony growths on the vertebrae can also narrow the spinal canal and irritate the sciatic nerve
Dr. Morris will also discuss the typical symptoms of sciatica, such as:
- Radiating pain in the buttock, back of the thigh, and down the leg (often on one side)
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Weakness in the leg or foot
- A “pins and needles” sensation
- Pain that worsens with sitting or standing for long periods
Discover Effective Treatment Options for Sciatica Pain
The good news is that sciatica is often treatable. Dr. Morris will discuss a comprehensive range of treatment options, including both non-surgical and surgical approaches:
- Conservative Management:
- Rest and activity modification
- Pain medications (over-the-counter and prescription)
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Physical therapy (including stretching and strengthening exercises)
- Chiropractic care
- Acupuncture
- Injections (epidural steroid injections)
- Surgical Options: In cases where conservative treatments are not effective or when there is significant nerve compression, Dr. Morris will discuss surgical options such as:
- Microdiscectomy (to remove a portion of a herniated disc)
- Laminectomy (to widen the spinal canal)
Tips for Preventing Sciatica and Maintaining Spine Health
Dr. Morris will also share valuable advice on how to maintain a healthy spine and potentially prevent future episodes of sciatica, including proper lifting techniques, posture, exercise, and ergonomic considerations.
